‘Uber For Bikes’ Coming To UK

You could soon be seeing a lot more bikes on our roads (and more bike storage on the streets) as a new business likened to the ‘Uber for bikes’ has been imported into the UK from China.

In UK, we’ve not got the best reputation for being a particularly bike-friendly place, and here, only 2 per cent of journeys are taken on a bike. With roads becoming busier and London in chaos at rush hour, could ditching the car and opting to bikes as your mode of transport be the perfect way to battle congestion and play your part in reducing pollution?

A trio of businesses from China is ready to bring ‘Ofo’ to the UK market – the equivalent of our Uber, but for bikes instead according to The Guardian. With plans to offer it in key areas across the UK, the concept is based on bike sharing, with docking stations available for people to hire a bike for their commute. Already launched in Cambridge, some people have been unsure of the concept amid worries that docking stations could become over capacity unless carefully monitored.

Could this be the future for the UK in moving away from cars and improving the air quality? With hundreds of bicycle docking stations popping up all across the world. The Netherlands, after a complete overhaul of their roads and cycling routes, have made bikes the most popular mode of transport, with two thirds of journeys made on a bike. 22,000 miles of cycling tracks have been introduced making the Netherlands the most bike friendly place in the world!
